Jared Lee Cochran, age 3, of McDonough, GA passed away February 28, 2007. He was born August 2, 2003 in Clayton County. Jared was a fun loving child and even though he was visually impaired he touched the lives of everyone who knew him. He is survived by his parents, Robert and Misty Cochran of McDonough; sister, Ariel Cochran of McDonough; grandparents, Ronnie and Doris Pittman of Locust Grove and Susan and Ted Weathersbee of Snellville; aunts, uncles and cousins.

Funeral services for Jared were Saturday, March 3, 2007 – 3:00 PM in the chapel of Haisten Funeral Home with Rev. James Powell and Rev. Dewey Fisher officiating. Interment followed at the Locust Grove Cemetery.

The GOPBC expresses our deepest sympanthy to Misty & Robert, and their entire family.
We are also currently establishing a Memorial Cane Bank in Jared's name.

2007 National Convention Update. The 2007 National NFB Convention is in Atlanta this year. The National Convention is well worth a drive across the country to attend in places like Dallas, TX or Lexington, KY (the locations of the last two national conventions). Having the convention in our own state is an extra bonus for GOPBC members, making a great convention even easier to attend. If you haven't been able to make it to past conventions, please consider attenting this year when it is as close as a drive to downtown Atlanta! Find more details here about the 2007 National NFB Convention.

Atlanta Symphony invites GOPBC Children to visit! December 19, 2006 – GOPBC Members were invited to attend an Atlanta Symphony Orchestra rehersal. Our children were allowed to go on stage and meet with several of the symphony musicians afterwards for a very fun visit that was educational as well. Get more information and some photos of the event here.

Congratulations to GOPBC President Stephanie Kieszak-Holloway
Stephanie was honored twice in October 2006 with awards.
At The NFB of Georgia's Black Tie White Cane Dinner, Stephanie received the 2006 Keith Tonge Leadership Award.
Stephanie also revieved the 2006 Robert J. Winn Family Education Award award from Hadley School for the Blind.
Stephanie also became a member of the National Board of Directors at the 2006 National Convention in Dallas last summer.

NFB of Georgia 2006 State Convention was October 6-8, 2006
The GOPBC had a number of informative items on the schedule for our meetings, including discussion of several topics and presentations by Joe Cutter, Early Childhood Orientation and Mobility (O&M) Specialist. Thanks to all of our members and guests who made this a great meeting! Much of the information presented was video taped and we hope to be able to make portions of the meetings available on DVD and possibly VHS in the future.

The NFB of Georgia's Black Tie White Cane Banquet rounded out the festivities at the 2006 State Convention. While generally a separate event, having the state convention in Atlanta in 2006 offered a chance to bring together the dinner with the convention. If you were not able to attend the dinner in 2006 we hope you'll try and find a way to join us in 2007. (Details for the 2007 banquet will be posted as soon as they are available.)

The GOPBC Summer Social was August 12, 2006
Thanks to all who attended the 2006 GOPBC Summer Social! Some of us got a little damp from the thunder showers but we still had a great time. These gatherings are unique opportunities for you and your family to socialize with other blind & vision impaired children and their families. (It is also a nice chance to just relax and have something to eat!) Click here for some pictures from the 2006 Summer Social.

A brief review of the NFB's 2006 National Convention in Dallas. If you were unable to attend, you missed a lot of good information and opportunities for yourself and your blind or vision impaired child. It is hard for most of us to take a week off (or even a few days) and travel across country to attend the national convention. Still, many attendees who go once find the time and money to return again and again. The good news is that to attend the July 2007 National Convention, you only need to make it to Atlanta! Here are some photos and more information about the 2006 NFB Convention in Dallas.

Membership Drive
We continue to grow and gain new members, but we can never have too many. If you know of any possible new members or have any suggestions, please email us!

Web Update Info
Our web site is still growing. We're doing all we can to make our site more and more useful to our members. Our goal for the site is to make it the place where a summary of the GOPBC's collective experience is placed. Over time this may grow into a variety of printed pieces as well, but the web is more cost-effective for us at this time and when things are needed in print, they can generally be printed from the site. Please visit our site often and feel free to offer suggestions. There are some places where we have noted that members can have things posted if they wish, but we've had limited response to that so far. Don't be shy! All members' feedback and participation is welcome and encouraged. Click here to email the site webmaster.

GOPBC Shirts
We ordered our first batch of GOPBC shirts (some of them could be seen on our members at the 2006 National Convention.) They came out well-- we were pleased with them. (Here are some photos.) If you didn't get a chance to order some for your friends & family, don't worry-- we will order more soon. Email us and let us know you're interested and we'll get another order together.

Phone & Address Change Reminder
Please remember that the GOPBC mailing address and phone number have both changed in the last couple of months. Membership forms have been revised on-line. If you plan to send in a membership form, etc., please use the newest address for fastest results. (The old address will still reach us but has to relay through the Georgia NFB office first.)
