2006 Cane Walk

Return to the 2006 Dallas Review Main Page

Two sisters (shown in matching white shirts) on a cane walk at the convention. The younger girl, age three, is blind. As one might expect, at at this age she's just learning to use her cane. Her older sister, age 12, is typically sighted so she wore sleep shades for the walk. The cane walk helped the little girl gain a little more experience with her cane and the older sibling to learn more of what it is like for people to travel with canes and to have a bit more understanding of how to help her little sister work better with her cane.

If the idea of your blind child using a cane is a bit frightening, you may find that a chance to try using a cane yourself (especially with an experienced guide) may be very helpful.

People in a variety of situations like to go on the cane walks at a convention-- those leaening to use canes gain a bit of experience, while siblings, parents, grandparents, and friends can learn more about the mystery of the white cane... it is a truly unique oportunity to gain information and understanding about cane travel!
